HURT

Look at the Theme of Hurt, in all instances of the book generally, on its series.

It is just to say that in the beauty of the author Anita Desai the writer on the book ‘Clear Light of Day’ one of the main themes is hurt. The theme of hurt is the actual background on which this story lies since it is highlighted on numerous occasions throughout the story. Due to the fact that this theme is so heavily weighed din this book the different aspects where hurt occurred in the novel will be discussed and examined.

The theme of hurt was displayed in the first instance of the novel where it related to the partition of India. It was seen that the country was being divided by the Hindu’s and Muslims living in the country. This caused great pain since many had to move to new homes and the fact that wars amongst even neighbors stirred up because of this division. Before Anita Desai went onto any other emotional hurt by the character’s she illustrated firstly the hurt of the society where the setting of the book took place.

The hurt of Tara was also specified where she would reflect on the little time that her biological mother spent with her on a daily basis. It was seen that when Tara tried to communicate with her mother and share moment with her she would be totally ignored. For instance, when Tara was walking on the Rose Walk and tries to show her a pearl (which was actually a snail) but her mother refused to give any attention. The hurt of leaving Bim alone when she was attacked by the bees also became evident within the place. Also, the fact that Tara left Bim alone was also depicted when Tara asked for forgiveness of this particular hurt.

In addition, the hurt of Bim was also expressed as it relates to her and her brother Raja. Bim was also filled with bitterness and heaviness due to the abandonment of her brother Raja. They both made future plans to stay with each other but Raja did the contrary to this leaving her with emotional wounds. This placed a burden on her because her bitterness was often brought up when she spoke about Raja.

The hurt of Aunt Misra was also seen because of the lost of her husband. This must have caused great hurt to her soul since she lost her companion. It was even proven in the play that she was hurting because she would always wear the colour white which was symbolic to mourning.

In conclusion, one can see that the theme of hurt in fact played a crucial role in the development of the plot within this novel.

Baba's Character in Clear Light of Day

In the book 'Clear light of Day' written by Anita Desia, one can see that the way in which her style of creating this character was unique and also symbolic not only for his family but the readers alike. The motive of Desai's work is to leave a constant reminder within the reader's mind, where Baba's character is concerned.
Within the novel Baba represents the symbol of 'unchange'. This is so because his character keeps at a stagnant position, where his thoughts, actions, code of conduct remains with the same exact features throughout the entire play. Baba still plays with his instrument (the gramaphonea) and pebbles even though Bim attempts to get him to do other things. His features fails to comprise with anyone else actions but his. The same actions that he does which were mentioned before such as the playing with his instrument and pebbles, it was teh same exact features he did when he was a child. Therefore, Bim keeps being reminded about her childhood since he he always does the smae activuities as he did as a child. Also, he remains unchange where his health and taking care of himself is concerned. This is so because he is mentally challenge Bim still has to take care of him like she did when he was a child. So in fact every aspect of Baba remains the same because of the lack of change. Due to Baba remaining unchange, he causes Bim to also act in this manner as a resukt of him. This is so because Bim's life remians unchange since she has to take the responsibilty of taking care of him on a daily basis since both Tara and Raja left the household. Thus causing her not to be flexible with her personal life, such as getting married, since Baba's character is still unchange causing her as result to be this way since she has to take care of him because of his sickness,
In conclusion, one can see that in fact Baba's character is a symbol of unchange within the novel of Clear of Light of Day, since he traits remains stagnant such as playing with his pebbles and gramaphone throughout the novel.

Did Williy Loman’s family lead to his demise?

Did Williy Loman’s family lead to his demise?

In today’s society there are numerous reports on suicide and when digging deep to understand the truth, family crisis always seems to be the main cause. The question must be asked was Willy a victim of his own death? The answer to this is to a certain extent.

This is so because Willy’s perception on life was primarily based on the American Dream. This helped cause his own demise because when he realized he was not accomplishing his dreams it caused a negative impact on his life. Willy thought that you had to be well liked, financially stable, has many women and an education is not required for one to get this dream. Willy realized that this was not so because he was already on the verge to commit suicide. Therefore, one can see that through his own perceptions and lifestyle caused his own demise.

On the other hand, we see that his relationship with Biff and Happy help cause a breakdown in his life. Happy did not have a close relationship with him, so the love level amongst them was very low. This caused Willy to feel neglected in a sense since Happy did not show much interest to him. Also, Biff lost respect for him when he found out his father was cheating on his mother. This also affected Willy because not only did Biff distance himself from his father, Willy felt that he had lost his favourite child.

In the case of his wife Linda, she would often support Willy and humble herself to him. However, when saw Willy’s attempts of suicide she did nothing verbally or physically to him Willy out of his condition. These behaviors by Willy’s family seemed to have to his breakdown due to lack of support from his family.

Can Willy Loman and King Lear be seen as tragic characters?

Can Willy Loman and King Lear be seen as tragic characters?

Tragic flaw can be defined as an unwillingness to submit passively to the established order and values of a particular situation. With this particular definition one can see that both Lear and Willy were indeed tragic characters. This is so because as the definition clearly says a tragic flaw is when an individual fails to accept the established truth before them. Both Lear and Willy were found with this type of behavior, where the reality of things seemed to be pushed aside.

Lear’s tragic was his obsessive trait of being flattered and praised by the individuals around him. This can be illustrated in Act 1 Scene 1 where Lear was easily persuaded by his two older daughter’s Goneril and Regan with flattery words. Due to his tragic flaw he segregated himself from the one who truly love him, which was daughter Cordeila because she did not apply flattery words in her speech. Rather he preferred Regan’s and Cordeilia speeches since it was flattery but in reality deceit. Lear’s tragic flaw caused him his health and even his life since he was blinded by the deceit around him. Therefore, one can see that Lear was indeed a tragic character because of flaw which was to hear flattery.

In addition, Willy Loman was also seen as a tragic character in the novel death of a salesman. Willy had too many desires that were not plausible. His belief was surrounded on ‘The American Dream.’ Also, he thought one could attain this by being well like, having an abundance of money and many women. Loman flaw was that he tried to get this dream so much that it lead to death. Thos occurred when he thought he could not succeed anymore and decided to take his own life as a result.

In conclusion, it can be said that both individuals Willy Loman and King Lear were both indeed tragic characters because of the tragic flaws they had they lead them to a detrimental stated in the end.

The Relathionship between Willy Loma and his two sons (Biff and Happy)

The Relationship Between Willy Loman and his two sons (Biff and Happy)

It can be made evident that Willy Loman from the novel 'Death of a Salesman' can be seen as a family oriented individual due to the mere fact that he pursued to have kids with his wife Linda. Also, it can be seen that his way of life was resolved around theirs. However, the relationship amongst each child differed slightly, this will be examined briefly. The relathionhsip that Willy tried to attain with his children was more on a financial standpoint. This can be seen where he encouraged his children to gain 'The American Dream', which was to be 'well liked', have numerous amount of women so that they can automatically be moved up the hierarchy structure within society. Although from a reader's standpoint his way of having a relationship between his children may seem to be wrong, it was his way of showing affection. He encouraged stealing, lies and even not encouraging assignments to be done. He did this because he thought these were trivial things in life and discipline was not a necessity because it was the American dream that mattered for one to be successful in life.
Although it was mentioned that Willy was family oriented the amount of love showed to each child was was not that of equality. In the case of Biff, Willy had a stronger connection with this child. Willy would emphasize more the importance of the American Dream and would try his endeavour to see him achieve it. When his friend's child Bernard would encourage Biff to work on his subjects especially maths. Willy saw it as a waste of time for child Biff, since he was already well liked and Bernard was not. Even though this may seem as the wrong advice for a parent to do, it was his way of showing that he cared. Due to Willly's actions it allowed Biff to also have a close connection with his father. However, the relationship between the two tragically crumbled when Biff found out his father was having an affair with another woman. There is when we see that close relationship amongst the two faded.
On the other hand, Happy and Loman originally had a faded relationship because Willy's actions. Willy preferred his son Biff and it was demonstrated on a daily basis. Nothing Happy did seemed to be enough for his father. He elevated Biff more which caused the attention span of Happy to be limited and crushed.
In conclusion, it can be said that Willy's type of parenting skills is different from a normal reasonable person but it was his way of showing love.

Analyze the Character of Willy Loman to King lear.

Analyze the Character of Willy Loman to King lear.

The creative writing of Arthur Miller and William Shakespeare both unravels protagonists that can be analyzed collectively because of the character traits they hold. Within this essay both characters Willy Loman from the novel Death of a Salesman and King Lear from the novel King Lear will both be evaluated.

Both Willy Loman and King Lear can be seen to have similar and different features that were made evident throughout the entirety of each novel. The points that will be discussed to prove their similarities are; denial, lack in advice taking, want for power and prestige and favoritism of children. Also, the points that show difference amongst the characters are: family structure, status in society and type of lifestyle.

Lear and Willy Loman shared equally the same mindset of denying the reality of situations. Lear suffered tremendously from denying that his two older daughter’s Goneril and Regan were not faithful to him. Also, Willy did not seem to realize that is idea of the American dream was not realistic. These two characters seem to exempt the realistic view of their situations and resent the truth before them. Due to this is caused both characters health to deteriorate and even result to death in the latter.

Another similar character is that both failed to take sound advice from people who genuinely cared for their well being. This was illustrated in the case of Lear where the Fool would often advise him about the poor decisions he made and how to resolve them. However, the Fool’s advices and suggestions were never taken into consideration but rather ignored, even though they were truthful. Willy Loman showed this same behavior when his friend Charlie would always offer him a job or money but he would always seem reluctant to follow Charlie’s suggestions and advices like that of Lear.

The want for power and prestige was one of the prevalent similarities between both characters. Although Lear gave up all his resources when he divided his kingdom he still thought he still had power to give orders. Also, his knights being around were symbolic to his want of still having power. Therefore, one can see that he wanted prestige or status to still have the reign of a King although technically he was not. In addition, Willy Loman to was seeking for power and prestige, this can be seen from his American dream, where he thought one had to have money and power.

Finally, each individual had a favourite child that they loved unconditionally. Loman favourite child was Biif, whereas Lear favourite child Cordelia. Lear did not want to vanish Cordelia, so he tried to give her another chance to redeem herself from the speech she gave. This shows the love he has for her over the others. Loman always pushed and motivated Biff to attain the American dream and also allowed him to be spoilt.

Though it was evident that each character shared similar characteristics there were also difference that was analyzed. It was seen that the family structure of each character was different. Loman was more family oriented and in touched with all members of the family. Unlike Lear who showed more attention to his daughter Cordelia only. Loman had a wife who helped with the raising of the children, unlike Lear who raised his children by himself. Another observation made was that Lear had all girls, while Loman had all boys in his family.

The status within society was another difference amongst the two. Lear was at the apex of the society according to a hierarchy structure, as a king. However Loman would be seen as the lower class because of his lost of employment and financial problems he occurred.

The individual lifestyle were much different also, due to the fact that Loman had to work earnestly to earn money, while Lear did the opposite since his status allowed him to be rich automatically.

In conclusion, it can be said that each character shared vital qualities but had different traits at the same time.
